"I am here to dominate the human race", says Sophia.

Sophia who? Sophia is a humanoid robot, with the mesmerizing ability to make efficient and effective conversations induced with an accurate amount of facial-expressions who appeared on a popular talk show, where she joked about her intentions to “dominate the human race” in the future. This is not a matter to be laughed off.

With a billion dollar and decades on research, we are entering a new era of robotics and conscious artificial intelligence. A.I. is emerging in view to transforming our society as did the internet years ago. A.I. has always been there amongst us as speech recognition software, translation software, and as many other applications and services.

What is artificial intelligence?

The concept of using computer systems to perform tasks that would normally require a human. These can range from speech recognition and translation into different languages, all the way through to visual perception and even decision making.

Broadly speaking, anything can be considered as an AI, if it involves a program doing something that would normally be done by a human. Quite how this is achieved is not the point – just the fact that it can be done is a sign of artificial intelligence.

Almost all social media and software companies are working towards integrating some form of A.I. into their products and services. Today, we have driverless cars, robotic helpers, problem-solving A.Is, and we're just getting started. Machine Intelligence is expected to revolutionize the age of technology like we have never seen before that will have an enormous impact on the economy, job markets,  and our every day lives.

Sophia contradicts the conventionality of what a robot should look like and embodies classic beauty:  a slender nose, porcelain skin, high cheekbones, an intriguing smile, and deeply expressive eyes that seem to change color with the light. The world till now has not witnessed any robot this elegant.

Sophia was created by Dr. David Hanson, founder of Hanson Robotics who has built a reputation worldwide for creating robots that amazingly act and look human.  Dr. Hanson aspired to create genius machines that are smarter than humans and can learn creativity, empathy, and compassion—three distinctively human traits Hanson believes must be developed alongside and integrated with artificial intelligence for robots to solve world problems too complex for humans to solve themselves.

Sophia is Hanson Robotics’ brand new and much-evolved robot. She is media's most sought-after, having been part of interviews to multiple media outlets, sang in a concert, and even made it to the cover of one of the top fashion magazines. One of her interviews has managed to bring in billions of views and social media interactions. She has also shown her potential in business with her face-to-face meetings with key decision makers across industries including banking, insurance, auto manufacturing, property development, media and entertainment. Apart from these, she has appeared onstage as a panel member and presenter in high-level conferences, explaining how robotics and artificial intelligence will become a predominant part of people's lives.

Robotic reporter: AI in journalism

A Chinese robot, Xiao Nan has written a newspaper article and got it published. We now have a robotic reporter. Southern Metropolis Daily, based in Guangzhou published its first story written by a robot! It took the robot just a second to write a 300 characters-long article. Xiao Nan has a stronger data analysis capacity when compared to its human counterparts and is quicker at writing stories.

From accounting to telemarketing and from news reporting to sports umpiring, robots are marking their existence everywhere. A Japanese insurance company announced its replacement of a chunk of its workforce with an artificial intelligence system.

Many of the major IT services company is investing enormously in automation of processes in their traditional businesses like BPO, application management and infrastructure management. Robotics and automation are competing with humans more than complimenting them, or so it seems in the near future.

Thus, artificial intelligence is a major emergence of an era with its potential to complete hectic tasks through automation, therefore, increasing productivity. Using artificial intelligence and existing technologies side by side can help make faster decisions and carry out actions quicker.

Since humans naturally make mistakes from time to time, there came into existence human error. When programmed properly, computers do not make mistakes. With artificial intelligence, error-free data could be processed irrespective of the size of the dataset. Artificial intelligence has enormous potential pros. We humans should carry out appropriate judgment to apply artificial intelligence efficiently and productively.
